I Goofed...(Home Education-Pillar IV)

I posted Pillar V for my Home Education before I posted Pillar IV...sorry...
My Pillar IV is Great Books!!!
Steve and I have always done what we could to save our money so that each year we could add to our  library of wonderful and “living” books.  After 18 years now, we have gathered some of the best books for our children and I have always been so very grateful.  I so often find my new readers looking on the selves to see what might interest them.

Charlotte Mason said,
Thought breeds thought; children familiar with great thoughts take as naturally to thinking for themselves as the well-nourished body takes to growing; and we must bear in mind that growth, physical, intellectual, moral, spiritual, is the sole end of education.

This quote, for me, sums up why I feel real literature is worth the money and time.

In other Home Education posts I have mentioned some of my favorite places to get ideas for books....
Sonlight, My Father’s World, Greenleaf Press, Simply Charlotte Mason, Beautiful Feet Books Inc., Lifetime Books and Gifts, Lamplighter Publishers (We love Lamplighter!!!).

I have said this before, and I will say it again...just as I want to feed my children nutritious, healthy food I also want to serve their minds with nutritious mind food.  I want to inspire their precious minds and to stimulate their imaginations with the best literary food that is available.  And there is much available!!
So look around, rent from the library if you have to and ask for great books for birthdays and other holidays and start building your home library and teach those precious little minds to love a good book.

  1. I'm so with you! My problem is I need to weed out a bunch of "not so great" books from our library. This is close to the top of my to do list.

  2. AMEN! We become what we eat! IN every area of our lives!

We have so many books I dread thinking about if we move and have to pack them all! OYE!

    Love you!

  3. LOVE great books. Our children all LOVE TO READ and it is such a BLESSING!!!! We literally have sooo many, but can you every have enough? Not if you have children that eat them up- mentally that is. We give them books for birthdays, adoption days, and Christmas....and of course for fun too. :) thanks for the resources of new places to get them :)

  4. Wow- Shonni - your bookcase is amazing!! I'm hoping for a wall bookcase one day (will have to show Dave this picture!!). We also love books - I do have one question - what does the term living books mean?
Thanks for the links - I'm sure going to have fun taking a peek when I get the chance
    Have a wonderful day

  5. I TOTALLY agree! We love books here, and they are awesome teaching resources! My kids read way more than I can even get around to, and they learn GOOD stuff that I haven't even put in the lesson plans yet! LOL!

  6. Our library is not nearly as "wealthy" as yours, but boy do we love good "living" books. We got rid of 100% of all twaddle, and we are richer for it {especially the children's minds}. I even gave away all silly readers--and was blessed with the entire "Bible Stories for Early Readers" set!!!

  7. Slightly salivating over all the book shelves and books.

    And I agree 100%.

Nothing like a living book to explore and discover in ways that are amazing!
