I Had No Idea!!!

You would think that I WOULD KNOW...
I thought that it would be easy to do scrambled eggs and apples with sugar and cinnamon for supper since Steve, Kalyn and Caresse went to the Father/Daughter Dance tonight. Steve has been gone all week and I am really tired. And I thought that this would be a special treat for the other 8 under the age of 9 (OK, Keshawn isn't eating eggs or sugar/cinnamon covered apples...but still)...

I started with 3 apples for 8 and 24 eggs...guess what...

It wasn't enough...I cooked eggs three more times to a total of 26 EGGS, 5 apples and they were still hungry.

I can honestly say, I HAD NO IDEA that 8 small children could eat that many eggs. My chickens aren't laying yet, because it is to cold, but I am afraid if they get wind of this, I may have a large fowl suicide on my hands!

  3. Isn't that the way it always is...just when you think you can get away with a simple dinner...the crew goes and loves what is made so much they want more, more, more!

**You need to find a breed of chickens that lay through the winter. Ours have continued to lay regularly all through the bitter cold. But I can't remember what variety they are! We also leave the light on for them a lot...that makes them lay more. (You probably already know all that!) :)

  5. That is so funny! I can totally relate as I cannot keep our crew from asking for dessert before I even get the dinner dishes cleaned up.

  6. You have a beautiful family. A beautiful HUNGRY family!

Our chickens slowed down production during the shortest days of winter. Now that the sun is rising earlier and setting later, they're laying again. Our ducks never stopped laying, and they produce HUGE eggs.

BTW, thanks for your comment RE: my post at NHBO. May I add your blog to my blog list?

  7. Shonni, I can so relate! I never put my egg pan in the sink till I know we're done - 24 to 30 eggs later!
Kolton has some secrets for helping the hens lay in the wintertime (but I don't know them so I'll have to ask him!)

  8. Giminy... so much for the simplicity of it all!! Good thing you have your own chickens... I hope it is a hen house full... growing apple trees too?

  9. Eggs go so fast in our family of 12! Our hens produce 2-3/day but our dog seems to always find them before us. We have to take this chicken thing more seriously. In the meantime we go through one tray in one sitting. Thanks again for your sweet email. Love and hugs from Uganda.

    P.S. Your daughters are beautiful
